The Social Democratic Party (SDP), Action Democratic Party (ADP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) said on Thursday they were in talks to consolidate their efforts to forestall what they described as the rigging antics of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on behalf of the other parties at a press conference in Osogbo, the candidate of the SDP, Iyiola Omisore, said the three parties had decided to unite against APC’s plans to compromise the election.

“This is not a press conference of stories or long press release. Three of the major five political parties in Osun State met in the early hours of this morning after reviewing all the antics, pranks and rigging tendencies and boastings by the APC government of Osun State,” Mr Omisore said.

“We have heard innuendoes, we have heard permutations, harassment and direct claims that they were going to rig the election, arrest political leaders, stuff ballot boxes, use thugs from Lagos State.

“They also said at their rally that they are going to use federal power to force the Osun State people. One of this is when the Vice President came to Iwo and was giving out N5,000 and N10,000 each to people at this time of election and with oath taking.

“We are here to tell the Osun people that they should be ready to defend their votes. Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, Alhaji Akinbade and I met and decided that the parties will run their separate elections and with their agents, and we are going to ensure that we have free and credible election in this state.

“We want to assure the citizens that they should not be tormented, harassed or victimised and frightened to run away from the polling units on Saturday. We mean business in Osun State, we are ready for the election and the three parties have signed to a protocol of diligent, credible and fair election.

“We want to charge our agents to be vigilant at polling units. The ruling party has gone to the extent that they are using O-yes Cadets as presiding officers, instead of using corpers. They have been able to manipulate the NYSC to use O-Yes cadets at that level. We are making bold to say that our agents will resist any such action.

“So, the peaceful conduct of this election rests on the INEC and security agencies for them to play the game according to the rules. The people will not allow them to be rigged out. We are fed up with the government of the day and everybody knows that this government is the most corrupt in Nigeria, the most financially reckless and it lacks fiscal discipline.”

Mr Omisore clarified that the parties would not be forging into a single force for Saturday’s election because of their different goals for the people.

“These parties are in different stages of ideologies and policy thrust, you can’t just suddenly force them to jettison their ideologies. But there is a general acceptance that this government has performed so badly,” he said.

“SDP, ADP and ADC have agreed that their members should vote for their different parties.”

He also denied that the parties had signed any agreement with the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Ademola Adeleke, on supporting him.

“We are not aware that some parties signed agreement with the PDP,” he said. “We are not even sure that the PDP has a candidate as at today, so how can a virtual party be talking of signing with real parties,” he said.

“They are in crisis up till today and we don’t know what will happen to them tomorrow. All we know that SDP is going to the polls and we are going to deliver Osun State from the jaundiced and corrupt government of APC.”

However, the APC has described the coalition of the three parties as a “collision and confusion,” saying they are jittery and confused.

Kunle Ayatomi, the Publicity Secretary of the party, told PREMIUM TIMES that the allegations were baseless and could not be substantiated.

“They are not inferiors, the Osun people will reject them on Saturday,” he said.

“There is no coalition. They are in collision and they are in confusion. If they are not confused, they won’t be doing coalition three days to the election. To be very frank, that is an act of jittery.

“They are not a threat to us, APC will win fairly and squarely on Saturday, that is my reaction.”

On the use of money to induce voters and the use of O-yes cadets for the election, Mr Ayatomi said the O-yes cadet is a testimony that the Osun State government had been able to remove 60,000 young people from the streets of Osun and got them engaged in the various sectors.

He added that the parties making the allegations did not have any evidence to substantiate their claims.\

APC Survives…Babafemi Ojudu

Published

on

By Senator Babafemi Ojudu

When a couple of days ago I wrote that APC ,unlike PDP, will soon resolve her issues some didn’t believe.

It will implode, it will soon disintegrate so said the analysts so-called . They never wished our party well. This is not to say there are no genuine critics of our party.

I argued then that even if our problems are as high as Mount Everest we have wise leaders in President Mohammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and our National Leader Bola Ahmed Tinubu as well as many of our governors too who are reasonable and patriotic. They are not all self centered. They are men ( hope we have women soon ) who subscribed to the ideas and ideals of our party and not only what they can get .

As you have all seen, all of that brouhaha of last week has subsided if not vanished. My friend and brother Giadom came like a comet and vanished. My Comrade brother Oshiomole won one and lose one and we are matching forward to the future.

Don’t get me wrong . I am not saying things are perfect now but think about it ,no organization, just as no human being, is perfect. Wherever two or three people are gathered in pursuit of interests there must be conflict. It is the ability by the custodian of the larger interest to resolve the conflicts that makes for the resilience of such a group.

Make no mistake about it there will still be conflicts in the future. It is the way we are able to resolve it that makes the difference between us and PDP.
When as soon as the emergency NEC was over three days ago I called and talked to the dramatis personae including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and they all expressed their gladness with the way it went I knew we have disappointed our party’s enemies.

We are still very young a party. ANC is a more than a hundred old plus and yet members and blocks within the party still disagree. In the Republican Party today there are disagreements between President Donald Trump and some whose families are synonymous with the Party. APC was formed in 2015. As we go along we will continue to perfect our acts internal mechanisms.

We shall work assiduously to keep this party together and grow it because for many of us we can go to another . It is either the progressive movement or retirement from public affairs . As I said today on a radio program if I die and someone brings PDP flag close to my coffin, I will wake up , tear it, burn it and go back to sleep.

We therefore thank all our leaders as well as the entire members of our party for their love for the progressive cause. Let us stay resolute to our commitment to bring about meaningful change to Nigeria. Let us serve our people more. Let the people put in charge of our public till imbibe the character and integrity of our dear President . Let us think more of our people than our selves. Let us rededicate our lives to the service of our Nation.

Just as the task of rescuing our country is a work in progress so is the building of a virile and unassailable APC .

Now we know we will go to election in Edo and Ondo without any legal encumbrances. The party too and the gentleman governor from Yobe State handling her affairs for the next six months has promised to look into the grievances of members across the country. We also have the Chief Bisi Akande Panel. We shall all listen and cooperate with them as we pray for the committee to organize a successful convention in no distant future.

APC survives! Thank you President Buhari. Thank you all our leaders. God bless our teeming members and supporters. Let us continue to keep the faith.

ASIWAJU BAT MOURNS THE EXIT OF DISTINGUISHED SENATOR BAYO OSHINOWO

Published

on

The sudden, unexpected passing of Senator Bayo Osinowo has deeply hurt me and Lagosians. He was more than a close friend and political associate. Over the years he became like a family member and brother in so many ways.
Bayo and I have come a long way, dating back to our days in the pro-democracy struggles. We both enlisted in the Social Democratic Party where he served so well as the Youth Chairman of that party during the Third Republic and later in the Alliance for Democracy in 1998 after the restoration of democracy. Bayo’s contributions to the return of democracy were significant and enduring.
As a prominent political figure in Lagos, he served our state with dedication, passion and concern for the common man. In the Lagos State House of Assembly, where he was a four-time member from 2003 to 2019 representing Kosofe Constituency 1, he was more than a member of that House. He provided leadership. He was a stabilising figure. He worked hard and tirelessly to make Lagos a better place. He cared for all Lagosians.
His election in 2019 to represent Lagos East in the Senate demonstrated not only his immense political skills but also the affection the people have for him and his popularity. Thus far in the National Assembly, he discharged himself creditably as Chairman Senate Committee on Industries.
Like the committee he headed, Bayo was extremely industrious. Bayo was not born with riches. He rose from a modest background to the great heights that he attained.
His death hurt all who know him. Bayo was more than an excellent politician. As great a politician he was, Bayo was an even better person. He was a man of a kind heart and ready smile. His loyalty and enthusiasm was legendary, just as his generosity.
People loved him. So many tears have been shed. However, we must summon strength to carry on as he would want us to do.
My thoughts are with his immediate family. May Almighty Allah comfort and give them the solace that only He can provide. May Almighty Allah grant him eternal rest and admit him to Aljanna Firdaus.

SANWO-OLU EXPRESSES SHOCK, SADNESS OVER SEN. OSINOWO’S DEAT

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed sadness over the sudden death of Senator Sikiru Adebayo Osinowo, representing Lagos East Senatorial District at the Upper Legislative Chamber of the National Assembly, who passed away on Monday morning at the age of 64 after a brief illness.

Sanwo-Olu in a condolence message, signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile described Senator Osinowo’s death as a rude shock, coming at a time when the State and indeed the entire nation had just started benefiting from his wealth of political and administrative experience.

The Governor said Senator Osinowo’s demise had thrown the State into mourning, urging Lagosians, whose interests the late lawmaker represented at the National Assembly to use his death as a reminder that the battle against the ravaging coronavirus pandemic is far from being won.

“The death of Senator Bayo Osinowo is painful. He died at a time when we have just begun to consolidate on our successes and see a ray of hope in our fight against the covid-19. We must not allow the death of Senator Osinowo to deter us from forging ahead in our quest to finding a lasting solution to the dreaded disease.”

“I am saddened by the death of this fine gentleman; a loyal party man and committed democrat, with a deep understanding of the State’s social and political landscape.”

“Senator Osinowo was an extremely loyal politician, who started his political journey with the progressives and remained in the fold until his unfortunate exit today.”

“There’s no doubting the fact that he would be missed by the entire political class, particularly his immediate constituents in Kosofe, the Lagos East Senatorial District and the State as a whole.”

The Governor added that the best honour to give the deceased would be for government to speedily achieve a turn around in the State’s health sector by ensuring that no single life is lost on the account of poor health.

“We will continue to give priority attention to our health sector, improve on service delivery, trainings and other critical areas in the sector so as to ensure that no life is lost due to poor health facilities.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu condoled with the immediate family of the departed, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Senate, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan over what he described as the loss of a “dear colleague”.

He also sympathised with members of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos and at the national level as well as the Lagos State House of Assembly.

“I pray that almighty Allah grant the soul of our beloved Bayo Osinowo eternal rest and grant him a place in Aljannah firdaus, he said.
